firefox-gray Year of the Bear is an online literary magazine of short story and novelette-length apocalyptic/dystopian fiction and origin myths.  This may include the genres of science/speculative fiction, fantasy, surrealism/magical realism, irrealism, and absurdism.

There is no set publication schedule--if we like it, we publish it.

The Editor

Year of the Bear is run by a small staff looking to publish quality apocalyptic fiction.  Founder and Editor-in-Chief Ciara Burkett (Ursula Banteux) has a B.A. in Comparative Literature and English.  The title of her undergraduate thesis?  "Post-Colonial Science Fiction and Visions of Apocalypse."  Ciara speaks Hindi, Mandarin, and is in the process of learning Sanskrit (for no particular reason).  When she is not jumping from peon job to peon job, she works as a content writer and a fiction reviewer for Sotto Voce Magazine.

She is anticipating an M.F.A. in Creative Writing in the year before our awakening:  2011.

A few of her favorite books...
